Directed by Oliver Stone in 2016, Snowden is a fact based thriller for any hacking enthusiast. Fugitive for some, hero for others, Edward Snowden is an American whistleblower who leaked highly classified information from the National Security Agency (NSA ). The movie is a bit melodramatic as the director played it safe so as not to step on the toe of American government. Its is thought provoking, very interesting and definitely worth a watch. Snowden is worth adding to your hacking movies watch list.
WHO AM I
This is one of the best movies ever made on the workings of the hacking community. Released in 2014 by Baran bo Odar this movie is techno – thriller based on the activities of a computer hackers group in Berlin. Benjamin, a German computer whiz kid is invited by his friend to join form a hacker group called CLAY, that wants to be noticed on the worlds stage. The high point of the movie shows how difficult it is to hack even the weakest points in every kind of security system.
WE ARE LEGION
Released in october, 2012 by Brian knappenberger in the USA, This blockbuster hacking movie documents the beliefs and workings of the self – described “hacktivists”, Anonymous. Angered by numerous diverse issues like online censorship, police brutality and copyright, these group of hacktivists organise cyber attacks plus offline and online protests on government during the Arab spring while providing technical support for occupy movements. BLACKHAT
Blackhat is an ultimate crime action thriller for sure. Featured are Chris Hemsworth, the American government and the Chinese government ( two modern day super powers ), what else do you want? This is an ideal movie for a computer geek and a hacker to be precise because of the dominance of tech lingo in the movie.
Chris Hemsworth plays Nick Hathaway, an overly talented hacker who has been imprisoned for 15 years because of his bad deeds. Mother luck however smiles on him when a code he wrote in his youth is mysteriously found in a malware that triggered a radical attack in a nuclear power plant in China). Bruce Willis comes to town in this action packed thriller released in 2007 by director Len Wiseman. This movie takes the whole hacking and cybersecurity showoff to a whole new level when a young computer expert on the wrong side of the internet world comes across a cop who is hard to kill. John McClane is detailed to track down a hacker but ends up dealing with cyber criminals with the help of the hacker, Thomas. Sit back, grab your popcorn, watch this thriller and thank me later.
UNTRACEABLE
This is about the only hacking movie which has traces of lots drama, horror and suspense. It was released in January, 2008 with a budget of 35 million USD.
Directed in 2008 by Gregory Hoblit, Untraceable features an IT savvy murderer who keeps records go his heinous matricide on his personal website. He must be tracked down by the Internet Crime Division of the FBI else he’ll destroy more souls. This movie shines a bright light on internet ethics and its definitely a must watch.
